Formal Statement
Learning disabilities can influence how young students and adult learners gather, retain, and retrieve information. Learning disabilities can present in a variety of ways that include problems with reading, spelling, math functions, reasoning, and writing skills. While learning problems are often specific, they can also be affected by neurologically-based visual and auditory processing problems. That is, the actual learning problems can be influenced by how children and adults perceive information that they see and hear.
If a child had complications at birth or if problems begin to emerge at a young age with regard to their academics or behavior, consulting with a school counselor, teacher or psychologist may be helpful. A psychoeducational evaluation is often recommended if learning problems are suspected. This examination includes administration of a standard battery of aptitude, intellectual, and achievement tests to best determine how the student learns. This testing can assist in defining the problem areas as well as generating recommendations for the students continued educational planning to maximize their learning potential.
As part of the diagnostic process, there are other potential categories that can present. These can include more commonly seen attention deficit disorders. Several other diagnostic entities can include mental retardation, Asperger's Disorder, and specific behavioral problems that impact how a student might manage his or her classroom performance and education. These issues can frequently impact upon family life as well.
For high school students and adult learners the vocational and career decision making processes can be very important. Learning disabilities and career and vocational matters
are often interdependent. They can often impact upon how a person functions in an educational or work setting. Often times career indecision can be tied into learning disabilities. In this case, career or vocational testing can help sort out the issues for the uncertain student.
